How does Earthquake Alert detect an earthquake?

When an earthquake occurs, it releases energy in the form of seismic waves that radiate from the earthquake source in all directions.
The waves differ in their velocities and the type of tremor that they generate.

The fastest wave, and therefore the first to arrive at a given location, is called the P wave. The P wave alternately compresses and expands material in the direction that it travels.

The S wave (the destructive wave), is slower than the P wave and arrives next, shaking the ground up and down and back and forth perpendicular to the direction it is traveling.

Earthquake Alert is designed to detect the first to arrive wave (P wave) to let you know the destructive wave (S wave) is on the way. Earthquake Alert thus, gives you an opportunity to get yourself and your family out of harm's way.

What should I do if the alarm goes off?

You should immediately get to the best position you can find:

RUN OUTSIDE to a space clear of potentially falling objects (buildings, high voltage electric poles, chimneys, and anything else that might fall on you).

If you are inside a building and far from the entrance, move to concrete-reinforced sections of the building such as: exit stairways, bomb shelters, etc.

If there are no concrete structures near you, get under a desk or table and hang on to it, or move into a hallway or get against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. GET OUT of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place (things can fall on you). DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.

CAUTION: the above recommendations are not intended to replace the procedures and actions recommended by the fire department, the earthquake commission or other proper authorities. In the event of an earthquake, failure to adhere to safety precautions recommended by the authorities may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Consider preparing for an alarm event:

  • Make yourself aware of safety precautions recommended by proper authorities and follow them.
  • Select an easily accessible area of the house for maximum safety.
  • Stock selected area with canned foods, bottled water and first aid supplies, plus a flashlight and portable radio (test and replace batteries regularly).
  • Develop and practice your own family drills in response to both types of alarms:

RED LIGHT ONLY ALARM
Means a quake considered non-destructive is on its way.
Put your drill into practice and have family stand by, ready to move to pre-selected safe area if needed.

RED LIGHT + BEEPING ALARM
Means a potentially destructive quake is imminent.
Put your drill into practice and gather family in pre-selected safe area immediately.

How much warning time will I get?

The further the device from the epicenter of the quake, the more warning time it gives to seek safety. Likewise, the more solid the soil upon which your home is built, the faster it detects subtle tremors.

(The epicenter is the point on the earth's surface vertically above the point in the crust where a seismic rupture begins.)
